I would like to know what the members of the SGNA that are in flood zones are doing. We are in a newly resignated flood zone and I hear that flood insurance rates will be increasing 1000%. Several of my neighbors are severly affected and may lose their homes. Others of us are now wondering, what is the point of staying, decreased values have killed any equity, and selling a home with $2000 (+) flood insurance is next to impossible in this economy. I will now step down from the soap-box, thanks for listening.

    Hi Rick,

As an insurance agent and as a City Councilor I have a dual interest in flood insurance rates.

The most current flood maps for our area date back to 2000 and they were changed to reflect the 1996 flood. Public Works staff doesn’t know of any map related changes that would affect our area’s flood zone.

If flood insurance was purchased prior to 2000 and then:

    a. You refinanced
    b. Your insurance company re-underwrote your policy
    c. You switched insurance carriers

you could experience a change in rates.

As a city, the investments we have made have resulted in an overall 15% decrease in flood insurance rates.

    Morning Rick,
I have a little experience with the information around flood zones and ratings. Send me a private message and i would be pleased to discuss the issue.
